Ask for Alfonso Cuaron’s opinion and you’ll get it. The director of the film Gravity , which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, had a few choice words for 3D films.

With the advancements in technology 3D films seem to be all the rage, but for the Gravity director, certain 3D films don’t seem to tickle his fancy. Cuaron elaborated on why he thinks 3D films are crap. In an interview with Screen Daily . Cuaron said:

“The problem now is that they make all these films that are not designed for 3D and then convert them as a commercially afterthought – and they are crap. They don’t follow the rules of 3D of what does and doesn’t work.”

So where does that land his own creation, Gravity ? Of course, Cuaron digs it, having said that the film is made for a 3D experience just by watching in 2D. The filmmaker explained that “You’re only getting 30% of the experience.”

The Gravity director ended his note on 3D films with saying that, “there are a handful of films that have used 3D in a proper way so it can be an amazing tool.”

Of course he never went on to explain which films he thinks truly captures the true 3D experience.

However Gravity is receiving some high praise for its use of 3D technology. The technology that Cuaron has used reportedly enhances the experience for the viewer in a way that creates an immersive experience for the audience goer.

“The 3D is a character in the film. It contributes a character,” said producer David Heyman.

Alfonso continued to elaborate in the IMAX Behind The Frame feature:

“We wanted it to be an immersive experience, as if you’re sitting in the theatre but you feel as if you’re floating in space. There’s no other format as immersive as IMAX.”

Do you think Gravity will be a new take on the 3D experience?
