Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger of Nickleback announced their split this week after two years of marriage. Although the pair didn’t specify a reason, Lavigne took to Instagram to announce the news to fans, reported the Daily Mail .
Sharing a photo from their 2013 wedding in the south of France on September 2, Avril captioned the photo with the sad announcement. “It is with heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today,” continuing, “Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we’ve created many unforgettable moments.”

Avril also stressed that the break up isn’t nasty, elaborating that she and Chad Kroeger “are still, and forever will be, the best of friends.” Lavigne also wrote she and Kroeger will “always care deeply for each other.” Avril and Chad met in 2012 when they collaborated together on a Lavigne album, reports the Daily Mail. The pair were engaged after a month of dating, and were married on the French Riviera in July 2013.
The announcement, while unexpected, isn’t surprising. Both Avril and Chad have been seen in public without their wedding bands, although Kroeger said the couple found the break up rumors “amusing,” according to Vanity Fair.
In November 2014, Chad told Entertainment Tonight Canada that despite rumors, his marriage to Lavigne was fine, telling the media that wedding rings “come off then they go back on,” reported the Daily Mail. Even though their relationship was fine, however, both Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne experienced health issues, which likely added to the stress of their marriage.
Avril recently revealed that in 2014 she suffered from a debilitating case of Lyme’s disease, which left her bed ridden for five months, according to the Daily Mail. At the same time, Chad Kroeger suffered from a cyst on his voice box, which forced Nickleback to cancel their highly-anticipated North American tour.
Despite the demise of her marriage and her health issues, Avril Lavigne seems to be handling it well, and appeared on stage with Taylor Swift to sing her 2002 hit, “Complicated,” reports Vanity Fair. Avril was invited by Swift after the pair had a confrontation over a Tumbler post that compared the two singers, and Taylor wanted to smooth things over.
According to Vanity Fair, the Tumblr post compared “Swift’s effusive backstage meet-and-greets to Lavigne’s own hug-averse approach to her fans,” sparking Lavigne to tweet a response.

A few moments later, Avril Lavigne posted again , “So let’s keep it all about the love and stay positive.”
Unlike her marriage to Chad Kroeger, it seems Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift mended fences, since both posted warm and fuzzy Instagram photos, one of which Swift captioned, “So incredible sharing the stage with @AvrilLavigne ! ‘Complicated’ is such a brilliant pop song and I just love her.”
