Donald Trump’s sudden attack on Venezuela and the subsequent capture of the country’s President Nicolás Maduro have naturally raised questions about the American President’s ambitions related to international matters.

As Trump also hinted at his desire to take over Greenland, he was asked in a The New York Times interview if there was anything that could stop him from being so aggressive about decisions concerning other countries.

In response, the President said, “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.” He then emphasized his point, adding, “I don’t need international law. I’m not looking to hurt people.”

However, this kind of logic is questionable given the fact that the American President has not shown much morality while making decisions about other countries.

Asked in a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times if there were any limits on his global powers, Mr. Trump said: “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

Trump’s response quickly gained traction as netizens started to react on the President’s answer. Commenting on an X post, which shared Trump’s answer during the interview, one user commented, “Since he has no demonstrable sense of morality, that reply is problematic. That, and the constitution that this administration brags about yet ignores when inconvenient.”

Another one added, “The um, capabilities, of his mind-brain is the only thing actually saving us, that’s for sure.”

Another user offered a more critical perspective, “so at least he said what we already knew. Trump believes he has a morality code. He changes his mind when presented evidence. We need reporters to do more of what they did, which is literally show him evidence and be the last person in the room, before he goes on camera.”

One user mentioned, “The answer to why Trump has had multiple cognitive tests, MRIs, and who knows what else. He believes his mind is the only limit on his global powers. If anyone else said this while taking actions resulting in the death of other people, they would be committed for a psych eval.”

Trump’s words essentially paint him as a self declared king and one of the comments on X pointed the same out. Another user clarified Trump’s statement, saying, “In other words, no limits.”

Trump says the U.S. needs Greenland for “national security.”
But Greenland belongs to Denmark — a NATO member.

Any attack on Greenland would mean one NATO country attacking another, which would destroy NATO itself.

Big words, dangerous rhetoric.

Coming from a person holding so much power, Trump’s comments pose a threat to the countries who do not share a great relationship with America. Margaret Satterthwaite, UN Special Rapporteur, commented on Trump’s words, saying, “International law cannot stop states from doing terrible things if they’re committed to doing them.”

“I think that the world is aware of all of the atrocities that have happened in Gaza recently, and despite efforts by many states and certainly by the UN to stop those atrocities, they continued. But I think we’re worse off if we don’t insist on the international law that does exist. We’ll simply be going down a much worse kind of slippery slope,” she added.

Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib pointed out, “Trump’s illegal and unprovoked bombing of Venezuela and kidnapping of its president are grave violations of international law and the U.S. Constitution. These are the actions of a rogue state.”

Therefore, Trump should already be aware of the fact he and his administration are breaking international laws with the attacks that they are conducting on other countries. However, as he has proclaimed publicly, it now remains to be seen if or when his morality tells him to stop and who ends up paying the highest price for his actions.
