David Letterman’s Late Show contract is still going all the way through 2015. The man who made the “Top Ten List” and “Stupid Human Tricks” a regular thing has gone through decades interviewing some celebrities we’ll probably never meet, and he’s still planning to keep it up. Apparently the heir to the throne that Johnny Carson built sees no need to stop now, as just this year he celebrated his 20th anniversary show alongside comedy megastar Bill Murray, most likely a comedy tour de force in concept alone.
Can David Letterman keep it up long enough to see his 30th anniversary? It seems only his doctor knows for sure, as the man with the cheesy smile is joining Alex Trebek as one of the longest-running TV show hosts of all time.
In 2015, David Letterman will turn 68, the age people used to retire by, but as he jokingly put it, “Les [Moonves, president and CEO of CBS Corp.] and I had a lengthy discussion, and we both agreed that I needed a little more time to fully run the show into the ground.”
As David Letterman’s Late Show contract continues through 2015, we can only look back at some of the big moments in his late night talk show career, such as when Madonna couldn’t stop using F-bombs and got herself banned from the show, or when the above mentioned Lindsay Lohan smilingly told him up front that she wasn’t going to talk about rehab or her drug problems.
When Johnny Carson passed the torch to David Letterman, he was the same age the current Late Show host is at now. Jay Leno hit 63 before NBC replaced him with Jimmy Fallon , and many of Leno’s jokes came from David Letterman, who himself had been doing the Late Night show for nearly a decade before Carson stepped down.
David Letterman just seems born to be a talk show host and shows no sign of stopping now.
