Is a simple family in Connecticut looming with fear yet again? Let’s find out! Amidst America’s long-standing history of a series of brutal murders and bizarre court verdicts related to them, history cannot forget Tyree Smith’s story! Smith is the man who’s charged with the vicious killing of Angel Gonzalez in 2011 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Smith used a hatchet to kill Gonzalez and then consumed parts of his body, including his brain and an eyeball, while he was drunk.

In 2013, he was found not guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) and sentenced to 60 years in Whiting Forensic Hospital, but recent reports as of February 2025 claim that Smith has been granted supervised freedom and is no longer behind bars. Reportedly, Angel’s relatives, especially his daughter, are terrified and have filed for a restraining order to prevent Smith from returning to Bridgeport.

As per TMZ, in a recent interview, Angel’s sister-in-law, Talitha Frazier, said that she was fuming with anger and frustration that Tyree Smith was released and is back in society. She was remorseful that she would never be able to get her family member back, whom she loved and missed terribly.

Tyree Smith, who seemed like a complete psycho to everyone, claimed that he reportedly was following voices in his head that instructed him to commit the act. However, the Connecticut Psychiatric Security Review Board granted Smith conditional release. It declared that his mental health ( preferably schizophrenia and alcohol and drug disorders) was now stable as he had undergone a prolonged period of treatment. Thus, the doctors have given the green light for the convict’s discharge on Friday of this week.

However, Angel’s sister-in-law, Talitha Frazier, has strongly condemned this move and claimed that if anything goes wrong, then she would hold the doctors of the Connecticut Psychiatric Security Review Board responsible. Despite her anger, Talitha insists she does not wish Smith harm but believes he should have remained institutionalized for public safety. If given the chance, she says she would ask him one haunting question: “Why did you kill Angel?”

As per The Independent, GOP lawmakers Heather Somers, Paul Cicarella, Henri Martin, and Stephen Hardings said that the decision taken by the doctor was “mind-boggling.” “This terrible decision puts public safety in jeopardy and is yet another terrible message to send to CT violent crime victims and their families. This person should never be out,” they added.

Other similar bone-chilling cases of cannibalism and heinous third-degree crimes have been recorded previously in the history of America. Hence, experts have raised concerns over Tyree Smith’s release. In addition, notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was a similar case to Smith, who killed 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.

Dahmer was claimed to have used techniques of necrophilia and cannibalism and then killed them only to preserve parts of their body, which included the bones and skull. His case remains one of the most infamous in criminal history. Meanwhile, upon the release of Smith, Dahmer’s investigator, Dennis Murphy, alerted that individuals with a messed-up mental health record often re-offend and repeat the cycle.
