You don’t need to travel into the future to witness the unbearable horrors of a death ray. You just have to get to London. A 37-story skyscraper in London known as the Walkie Talkie building is reportedly melting cars in the city’s financial district.
Several people reported that the bright glare from the Walkie Talkie has melted their cars. The Telegraph notes that at least two vehicles have reportedly been damage by the intense light including a Jaguar XJ.
Martin Lindsay, owner of the XJ, said that the building caused more than $1500 worth of damage to his car. The Walkie Talkie allegedly melted his mirrors, the Jaguar’s badge, and parts of the bodywork panels.
Lindsay said : “Imagine if the sun reflected on the wrong part of the body… They’re going to have to think of something. I’m gutted. How can they let this continue?”
The building, which has been re-nicknamed Walke Scorchie, stands at 525 feet tall. It will include 660,000 square feet of office space and 23,000 sq feet of retail space. The main attraction, of course, will be the death ray.
The building’s developers, Land Securities and Canary Wharf, said that they had heard the reports and that they were investigating the matter.
The developers released a statement saying: “We are aware of concerns regarding the light reflecting from 20 Fenchurch Street and are looking into the matter. As a precautionary measure, the City of London has agreed to suspend three parking bays in the area which may be affected while we investigate the situation further.”
The building is scheduled to open in May.
