Amazon is hiring 50,000 temporary holiday workers to help with what the company hopes will be a record number of sales.
The practice of hiring a massive number on holiday helpers is nothing new. Physical retailers for years have hired extra workers to help them handle increased sales. Online retailers, on the other hand, have traditionally relied on current staff to fulfill orders.
Amazon, unlike some of its online competitors, is no stranger to holiday hiring. The company is hiring slightly more workers than it did for the same holiday season in 2012.
Reuters says Amazon hopes to bring several thousand temporary workers into full-time positions after the holiday shopping season has began.
Target will take on even more workers with 80,000 to 90,000 employees; however, those new job hires are down from 2012 when the company hired 92,000 workers.
Wal-Mart will also hire thousands of workers to help meet additional demand. According to reports, Walmart will employ 50,000 temporary employees.
As expected, toy seller Toys R Us will hire 45,000 season workers.
Retailers hiring new employees for a one to two month period is not a new practice; the real test will be to examine whether any of those companies hire a good amount of the workers into full-time positions.
