A Smash musical is heading to Broadway for a one-off performance.
The one night only performance of Hit List , one of the fictional musicals the characters in Smash worked on, will be held at 54 Below in New York City on December 9. The musical will have two showtimes, which both sold out within an hour of tickets going on sale.
According to The New York Times , Jeremy Jordan and Andy Mientus , who played Hit List creators Jimmy Collins and Kyle Bishop, and Krysta Rodriguez (Ana Vargas, a Hit List cast member) will star in the musical.
A news release for the musical describes it as “a modern fable about identity and the price of fame” that “tells the tragic love story of a wannabe pop singer who transforms herself to become a star and the hidden songwriter she uses to get there – but at what cost?”
The musical will also include songs that were intended for Hit List but didn’t make it to air. The score for Hit List is written by Drew Gasparini, Joe Iconis, Andrew McMahon, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman and Lucie Silvas.
On Smash , Hit List opened at Manhattan Theatre Workshop and transferred to Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre, winning seven Tony Awards.
NBC canceled Smash in May after two seasons due to poor ratings. Series creator Theresa Rebeck called the second season a “ complete disaster” after being removed from the show in March 2012 in what she called an “explosive situation.” Gossip Girl ‘s Josh Safran replaced Rebeck as showrunner.
Part of Smash ‘s second season failure can be attributed to the number of schedule changes the series underwent. The second season started airing Tuesday at 10 pm, but was later moved to Saturdays at 9 pm. The series was moved up an hour to 8 pm, where it finished airing its last episodes.
