What do you think of when you think of a librarian? Big glasses? Hair up in a bun? A modest dress? Well, the “Tattooed Librarians of the Ocean State” calendar might change the way you see bookkeepers.
The Rhode Island Library Association recently put its 2014 calendar up for sale. The calendar features 10 women and two men who love books and tattoos.
Colleen LeComte, who works at a library in the area, said : “It seems to be a lot of the young people entering the profession now have tattoos. It really shows how the profession is changing. It’s not your stereotypically little old gray lady with a bun anymore.”
This is the first calendar from the Rhode Island Library Association to specifically focus on tattoos.
The organization writes on their website that librarians and tattoos actually have a lot in common. According to RILA, librarians work to maintain history while fighting against history. Tattoos also preserve history and are considered by many as a protest against the status quo.
The organization writes: Libraries are unique as they simultaneously foster the preservation of histories and traditions, while fighting censorship and fostering cutting-edge learning environments. Likewise, tattoos can also represent the preservation of history and resistance of the norm.”
