Bethany Hamilton is officially married.
The beautiful soul surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack in 2003 was married this week to Adam Dirks in Kauai.
Hamilton writes on Twitter :
“Today was the most beautiful, wonderful best day of my life! God is more than good. Excited to live life with my husband Adam Dirks!”
Hamilton and Dirks started seeing each other last year after going on a blind date. They were married on August 18 in front of about 300 people to a secluded estate in Hawaii.
Hamilton told People Magazine :
“It was the most amazing day of my life.”
Hamilton lost her arm in 2003 when she was attacked by a tiger shark. The injury could have ended her career but Hamilton got back in the water and continued to compete. Her journey back to competition inspired the movie Soul Surfer in 2011.
Despite the frightening incident in 2003, Hamilton still sees the ocean as a place of serenity. While she was planning her wedding, Hamilton would look to the ocean for peace.
The surfer wrote on Instagram : “Long busy days but being in the ocean helps melt the stress away.”
