The New York Jets finished the 2010 NFL regular season with an 11-5 record and came home second to the New England Patriots in the AFC East. It seems to me that this is a pretty good football team that focused in too much on beating the New England Patriots in the playoffs. Once that was done, and they got their revenge of the Indianapolis Colts they didn’t seem to have anything left for Steelers. Of course Rex Ryan did not pull any of his antics that week, and that seemed to leave the team a little flat. I hate to ay this but apparently the Jets need Ryan to pull his shanigans to be successful.
The offense wasn’t great, but they sure did get the job done. They scored 367 points or 22.9 points per game on average. That was good enough for 13th best among the 32 NFL teams. Mark Sanchez is their starting QB and he completed 54.8% of his passes for 3,291 yards, for 17 TD’s, and 13 INT’s. Those numbers show he is still a young QB learning the NFL game. The running game behind him averaged 148.4 yards per game, and that number really saved them.
The defense gave up 304 points or 19 points per game on average. Their take away differential was +9, as they forced 17 fumbles and picked off just 12 passes. For Revis Island that number seems a little low. In terms of team defensive stats they mostly ranked in the top half of key categories beyond that INT total that was just 25 best among the 32 NFL teams.
The Jets are always a tough team to figure out. On paper they look a lot better than they did against the Steelers, or that their numbers indicate. I guess it is hard to find fault with an 11-5 team, but they did lose to home games to the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins. That seems to say they have some holes that need to be addressed.
