USA has renewed Psych for an abbreviated eighth season consisting of eight episodes, Deadline reports.
Psych is currently the longest running series on the network, with its sixth season ending on April 11, 2012. So far, 95 episodes of the mystery/comedy have aired.
The news was announced on the Psych Twitter page .
After what may seem like an eternity to fans, the seventh season of Psych will be premiering February 27. The last three seasons have been anomalies for the series, with the premieres and finales falling outside of the usual July start or February/March end dates.
The first three seasons premiered in July and ended in mid-to-late February or early March. Season 4 premiered a month later than usual in August 2009, with the finale airing on March 10, 2010. Season 5 had a regular July premiere, but ended in December 2010. Season 6 premiered nearly a year later in October 2011 because USA had two new series beginning that summer. The finale pulled a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.71 million viewers.
Season 7 will consists of 16 episodes, one of which will include the series’ 100th episode, as well as a two-hour musical. It is uncertain at this point if season 8 will be the last.
USA pulled an unprecedented move with season 7, inviting fans to write the tagline. Fans can rate and share their favorite taglines, and the winner will appear on a poster with Shawn (James Roday) and Gus ( Dule Hill ).
