When it was announced that actor/rapper Donald Glover was not coming back full-time to the NBC show Community , we all thought this meant that his rapping career would flourish, and the true-to-life show he was developing for NBC would be put on hold. Now it appears that things have changed a bit for Glover.
According to Deadline , Glover is actually gearing up to star and create his own comedy series for FX. The show, which is tentatively titled Atlanta, will follow the music scene in Atlanta. Glover, who is from Atlanta has a blossoming rapping career under the name Childish Gambino.
It’s being reported that several networks were interested in Glover’s talents, but FX appealed to him in the end due to their accommodations concerning his schedule. Glover will balance both his acting career and his music career, which he wasn’t able to do all too well while trying to meet the demands of NBC’s Community.
As for Community, Donald will appear in five out of thirteen of the episodes that are slated to run for the fifth season of the show. As we reported, creator Dan Harmon is back on board as a writer, this is after he bumped heads with Chevy Chase, which resulted in his firing.
Donald Glover currently plays Troy Barnes, a former high school jock turned “air conditioning repair annex recruit.” It isn’t said how Community plans to wrap up Donald’s character, or address his absence. Of the five episodes he’s appearing in, it isn’t known when those five will air, or if they will air in sequence.
Of Glover’s departure , Harmon said it’s “A train of pleasure followed by a caboose of pain.”
