Xbox Live Gold’s free games for October include a heavy hitter or two. Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes will join the ever-popular Halo 3 as free downloads for the month with an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
As we close in on the inevitable release of the Xbox One, Major Nelson confirmed on his blog which games will be free for the month of October as long as you have an Xbox Live Gold account. Both games won’t be available at the same time, however, so Halo 3 hopefuls will have to wait it out.
Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes , much like its partner next month originally costing $14.99, will be free from October 1 through October 15 . The popular fantasy video game series combines role-playing, turn-based strategy, and puzzle genres into a game sizzling with story-based and optional quests. Artifacts, returning from Heroes V , can be equipped for combat to modify troop or hero abilities and add a bit more variety to the game in general. Also included is a multiplayer mode allowing all ten heroes to be used.
The other Xbox Live Gold free game for October is a bit more familiar to the mainstream gamer.
Halo 3 , obviously the third in the series, continues the story of Master Chief as he teams up with the disgraced Covenant Elite commander to defend humanity from an alien species that deems mankind to be an affront to their gods. Halo 3 introduced the concept of support weapons, which are considered super weapons almost by definition because they slow the player down while delivering a wallop on execution.

Halo 3 , the second part of Microsoft’s free games with Gold promotion , also introduced equipment, a sort of role-playing element which enhances gameplay with various advantages including a regenerating shield and flares. In general, the game was made to give the player more options in general than its simpler predecessors.
Halo 3 will be the second of the Xbox Live Gold free games, available from October 16 through the end of the month.
