Calvin And Hobbes Painting Continues Trend Of Making Us Cry For Old Comic

A Calvin And Hobbes painting making the internet rounds has continued the web trend of making us inexplicably sad about the comic, in situations where a grown up Calvin has not forgotten his childhood furry friend.

The Calvin And Hobbes painting was created by comedian Craig Mahoney, and kind of speaks to the themes of the comic as appreciated as a kid and revisited as an adult — not the first time the internet has revived the old brand in a heartstrings-tugging way.

In the Calvin And Hobbes painting, a grown Calvin is seen simply removing Hobbes from storage, presumably where the stuffed tiger resided for the years since the eternally six and eternally precocious kid packed him away.

Calvin is seen smiling wistfully, but Hobbes is silent and (quiet sadly) as he was when adults viewed him — limp, lifeless and not animated.

Over on Twitter, Mahoney joked about the sudden interest in his Calvin And Hobbes painting, tweeting :

“Thanks everyone for the love. I have no idea what to do with it. I’m only programmed to respond to crushing defeat. This is all new & weird.”

The comic had joked earlier:

“So, uh… Yeah. Welcome to all my new followers. Come for the nostalgic and geeky art. Stay for the self-deprecating dick jokes.”

He also tweeted:

“The Calvin & Hobbes painting has gone viral, which means that right now someone is referring to it as a hacky, derivative piece of s***.”

It’s not the first time internet fan art has revisited the comic like in the Calvin And Hobbes painting, and now-grown fans of the comic have retooled it to feature the alternate universe in which Calvin was on Ritalin (and ignores Hobbes, sniffle) and ones where Hobbes is passed down to Calvin’s daughter.

Does the Calvin And Hobbes painting make you wistful for its old comics’ pages days?
