The National have announced that they will release a new album in May.

The band released the statement through their Twitter account, on Monday February 25, as well as revealing that they also have a series of US tour dates and European festival shows to play throughout June and July.

The National’s Twitter statement read, “Oh and also, thought you might like to know that we’ll be putting out a new album in May.”

Their tour will start in their hometown of Brooklyn, New York, at the new arena, Barclays Center , which will be one of their largest ever gigs on June 5. The National will also be supported by Dirty Projectors and Bonnaroo.

The alternative rockers last released an album in 2010, with High Violet which reached the number 3 spot on the Billboard 200, as well as the number 1 position on the Alternative Albums chart.

Last year the rockers hit the news after they criticised Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign for using their songs over an advertisement, without asking their permission. The National are staunch Obama fans and have publicly voiced their appreciation for the President on several occasions.

Matt Berninger, the band’s lead singer, wrote on the advert’s Youtube’s comment section, “Our music was used without our permission in this ad. The song you’re using was written about the same backward, con game policies Romney is proposing.”

They also added, “We encourage all students to educate themselves about the differences between the inclusive, pro-social, compassionate, forward-thinking of polices of President Obama and the self-serving politics of the neo-conservative movement and Mitt Romney.”
