Former President George H.W. Bush served as an official witness to a gay wedding in Maine, according to an announcement by his spokesman on Wednesday.

While the former Republican president hasn’t commented on his stance regarding same-sex marriage, it seems that he had no qualms serving as a witness for two close friends.

Bush and his wife, Barbara Bush, attended the ceremony for Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen as private citizens and friends, according to CBS News .

Thorgalsen posted a photo of Bush on her Facebook page, showing the former president preparing to sign the marriage license. She commented, “Getting our marriage license witnessed!”

George H.W. Bush and his family have strong ties to Main and owns a compound in the coastal town of Kennebunkport. Thorgalsen and Clement own a store in the neighboring town of Kennebunk.

USA Today notes that Bush’s son, former President George W. Bush, openly opposed same-sex marriage in 2004 and backed a proposed constitutional amendment to ban it. However, he may have changed his mind since then.

The younger Bush stated in July that he wouldn’t comment on the issue because he “shouldn’t be taking a speck out of someone’s eye when I have a log in my own.” He later added that he isn’t in politics anymore, so he wouldn’t answer the question.

In an email from their honeymoon location, The Washington Post reports that the newlywed couple wrote , “Who would be best to help us acknowledge the importance of our wedding as our friends and as the former leader of the free world.” Clement added, “When they agreed to do so we just felt that it was the next acknowledgement of being ‘real and normal.’ ”

While there was no word on George H.W. Bush’s official stance on gay marriage, it appears he believes in at least one.
