Gillian Flynn said she dreamed of David Fincher directing the film adaptation of her 2012 novel Gone Girl while she was writing the book.

Gone Girl focuses on married couple Nick and Amy Dunne, and the latter’s disappearance on their fifth wedding anniversary. Ben Affleck plays Nick and Rosamund Pike plays Amy in the film version.

Flynn told Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday’s episode of Late Night that she is “obsessed” with Fincher , and knew she wanted him to the be the one to direct the Gone Girl movie. She even thought, “I hope he likes this scene” at certain parts in the novel.

“My all-time favorite director is David Fincher, who I’m obsessed with and have been in a creepy weird way for a long time,” Flynn said. “I was writing Gone Girl and, this is how big my ego is, I thought, ‘I hope David Fincher makes this into a movie.’”

Flynn also said she was surprised by the book’s success because it wasn’t something that “screams best-seller.”

Fallon, who said he was late to reading the book but couldn’t put it down, said he thought Affleck was the perfect choice for Nick.

“The whole thing about the character Nick is you have to believe he might have done something very, very wrong,” Flynn said. “At the same time you have to be like, ‘But I kind of still want to have a beer with him.’”

Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Emily Ratajkowski , Patrick Fugit, Carrie Coon, and David Clennon round out the film’s supporting cast. The film is scheduled for a 2015 release.

Gillian Flynn’s novel Dark Places is also being made into a film and stars Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Corey Stoll, Christina Hendricks, and Chloë Grace Moretz. The film began production last month in Shreveport, Louisiana , and is scheduled for a 2014 release.
