Mark this one in your yearbooks. #22 Brad Keselowski is your 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion. It is the first NASCAR championship for the young Michigan driver, and the first NASCAR championship for his car owner Michigan based businessman Roger Penske. Of course while the news is good for them, Brad’s dominating run to the title raises serious concerns on the health of NASCAR as its main feeder series.
Of course we can deal with concerns later. With two races left on the 2010 schedule Brad is the champ. He has done so on the strength of six wins, 24 top five finishes, and 27 top ten finishes. While those are certainly impressive numbers this last one is the reason Brad can now count himself as a NASCAR champion. Through 33 races in the 2010 season he has completed 100% of the laps run. That means he avoided trouble, stayed on the track and raced to a 5.3 average finish.
Yet again though, the Nationwide Series championship was one by a guy doing double duty (running in this series and in the Sprint Cup series), and by a Sprint Cup organization. For the growth and future of the Nationwide Series that is not good. Also given that he wrapped up the title this early, as Kevin Harvick did just a few short years ago, this series needs some new life and a better way to determine its champion.
