Cairo, Egypt — Four pharmaceutical students were arrested in Cairo for public indecency yesterday for performing the “ Harlem Shake ” viral dance sensation.
While they were videotaping themselves dancing in their underwear, angry neighborhood residents reportedly tried to assault them, according to AFP . Police have charged the quartet with committing “a scandalous act,” under Egypt’s strict public indecency regulations, the French news agency added.
The New York Daily News reports that a larger group of Egyptian students managed to get about 30 seconds of the “Harlem Shake” on video with the Giza Pyramids apparently in the background despite police interference (see video below).
As The Inquisitr has previously reported in its definitive guide , the “Harlem Shake” is, much like any big internet meme, something that grabbed the collective social media consciousness all at once — soldiers, celebrities, families with kids, sports teams, everyone seemed to be uploading videos of this bizarre yet compelling-to-watch dance phenomenon.
Although the original “Harlem Shake” stems somewhat from the 2012 song “Harlem Shake” by Brooklyn-based rapper Baauer, it was a YouTube upload by a group of Australian teens earlier this month that really launched the dance craze.
“Harlem Shake” videos all seem to follow the same general pattern: One person who is seemingly being ignored dancing alone at first, and then suddenly everyone gets into the act.
