The latest American Hustle trailer has hit, pitting movie megastars Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale in a battle for survival in the 70s.

The stars of The Hangover and The Dark Knight Rises have gone retro in a film about the struggle to survive as businessmen in the 70s, complete with barely styled hair and facial grooming. It tells the story of a brilliant con artist and his seductive British partner who are forced to work for an FBI agent who has his sights on various criminals, including a politician. The world they are shoved into is the kind that James Bond might feel right at home in, with gambling, espionage, and dealings with the mafia.

Director David O. Russell and Eric Warren Singer wrote the screenplay about the FBI’s infamous Abscam operation. As the movie progresses, the weak link is Irving Rosenfield’s wife (Jennifer Lawrence), who may just hold the key to making the entire operation come crashing down around them.

The American Hustle trailer shows us just how intense things can get when business goes wrong in an era before electronics made everything easier.

The trailer begins with Irving Rosenfield (Christian Bale) telling a man, “I think that you should treat people the way you want to be treated. … Also think, a favor over money. I think Jesus said that as well.”

The trailer tells us that some hustle for respect, alongside a few notes from a piano.

Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) tells someone, “Everybody thought I was gonna be the boss who’s gonna stay in the office. I’m outside in the field, I’ve got people working for me. My ideas, I’m running the show, I’m the quarterback and I’m back in the saddle.”

The trailer then tells us that some hustle for love, as vocals kick in with the piano.

American Hustle stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner. The film is slated to hit theaters everywhere on December 25.
