A transgender homecoming queen was crowned on Friday night at a high school in Huntington Beach, California.

According to the NBC, Cassidy Lynn Campbell was born male but said that she always felt like a girl. She started taking hormone blockers and has been sharing her transition from male to female with more than 18,000 viewers on YouTube.

Last night, Campbell broke down in tears when she became the school’s first transgender homecoming queen.

Cassidy said: “I’m so proud to win this not just for me but for everyone out there and for every kid — transgender, gay, straight, black, white, Mexican, Asian. It doesn’t matter, you can be yourself.”

School district spokesman Tom Delapp addd: “She was stunned. She kind of broke down on the podium.. She was shocked. She cried a lot.”

Cassidy told the LA Times that she decided to run for homecoming queen because she wanted to feel accepted. The 16-year-old said that she has never truly felt comfortable and believed that if she won homecoming queen it would prove that her peers accepted her for who she was.

Before homecoming Cassidy said: “If I win it would mean that the school recognizes me as the gender I always felt I was… But with all the attention, I realized it’s bigger than me… I’m doing this for the kids who can’t be themselves.”

Now that Cassidy Lynn Campbell has become the school’s first transgender homecoming queen, it’s time to get ready for the dance. Here’s a video from the YouTube star about her hair, makeup, and dress.
