Tomb Raider going back to its roots in new game

Reboots of stale old franchises are wildly popular nowadays, and Tomb Raider is next in line for the treatment. Like many of us, Tomb Raider sagged badly during its midlife period (2000 – 2003), but the last couple of games have been pretty perky, so I have some hope for this.

Game Informer revealed the new Tomb Raider adventure on its January cover, which features a younger Lara Croft. Says the magazine: “To build an entirely fresh Lara – a culturally relevant hero worth of the attention that once came so effortlessly – [Developer Crystal Dynamics] must break her first.” Yeah, whatever. Let’s hope she’s more sensibly proportioned in this version, eh?

The game will track Lara’s origins, with a press release explaining, “After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone, she has only one goal, to survive.”

Known simply as Tomb Raider, the title should be heading to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
