Lady Gaga’s Labral Tear Was Actually Broken Hip

Lady Gaga broke her hip in February, but the information wasn’t revealed until a recent interview with Women’s Wear Daily. While the singer’s hip injury was public knowledge, she kept it secret how bad the situation actually was.

The hip injury forced Lady Gaga to cancel her Born This Way tour and put her performance career on the shelf for almost six months. But while the public knew of her labral tear and hip surgery, they had not idea how severe it actually was.

MTV reports that Gaga revealed in the interview:

“I had broken my hip. Nobody knew, and I haven’t told the fans yet. But when we got all the MRIs finished before I went to surgery there were giant craters, a hole in my hip the size of a quarter, and the cartilage was just hanging out the other side of my hip.”

Mother Monster went on to reveal that the tear and broken hip could have caused more damage if she had performed again before seeking help. She explained, “The surgeon told me that if I had done another show I might have needed a full hip replacement. I would have been out at least a year, maybe longer.”

Thankfully, Lady Gaga’s broken hip didn’t get that bad. But for Gaga, recovery was the worst part of her broken hip, notes Yahoo! Music. As the 27-year-old hadn’t gone two weeks without performing since she was 14, sitting through six months of recovery was difficult. And recovery also meant being wheeled around in a wheelchair for a while.

But the experience wasn’t completely horrible. She commented, “I had six months to beef up my brain and my body. I got to put a giant white or black sheet of paint over my whole canvas and I got to review ARTPOP again.” So, while the situation was dire at points, Lady Gaga’s broken hip did come with some perks, which her Little Monsters will likely see on her upcoming album, to be released on November 11.
