Anne Rice’s ‘Christ The Lord’ Lands US Distribution Deal

Anne Rice’s novel Christ the Lord was recently picked up by the folks at FilmDistrict.

The book tells the story of Jesus during his youth. The movie will chronicle his struggle with being the son of God. The company hopes to have the flick in theaters by March of 2015.

According to Variety, the adaptation of Anne Rice’s Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt was originally announced way back in 2011. However, the film is now starting to move forward with a little help from FilmDistrict and a host of producers.

The website reports Hyde Park Entertainment, CJ Entertainment, and Ocean Blue Entertainment will co-produce the feature. 1492 Pictures’ Chris Columbus, Mark Radcliffe, and Michael Barnathan will also help bring the story to the big screen.

The Wrap reports Christ the Lord will be helmed by director Cyrus Nowrasteh. Anne Rice reportedly wanted him for the project after seeing his movie The Stoning of Soraya M. The filmmaker recently helped out with the controversial miniseries The Path of 9/11.

Although Rice scored a hit with readers when she released her fictional take on Jesus’ life, she wasn’t always dedicated to writing Christian-based fiction. The author is probably best known for Interview with the Vampire and a host of other horror-oriented novels. She also wrote an erotic version of the Sleeping Beauty story.

Anne Rice caused some controversy after famously criticizing organized religion a few years ago. While many thought she was turning her back on her faith, the writer later stated she was against some of the trappings of the church. However, she remains dedicated to Christ.

FilmDistrict also picked up the US rights to the upcoming Elton John biopic Rocketman. The film, which stars professional chameleon Tom Hardy, tells the story of the singer’s rise to stardom. Director Michael Gracey’s drama doesn’t have a release date as of this writing.
