Jaen, Spain – A Spanish teenager is facing criminal charges for allegedly killing her newborn baby after concealing her pregnancy from her parents.
The 17-year-old was arrested at Jaén Hospital, where she was taken after she began hemorrhaging and suffering pains. While there, a doctor discovered that the teen had recently given birth and followed standard hospital procedures for such cases .
Police said the parents seemed to be unaware of their daughter’s pregnancy and that they planned to question them, the girl’s boyfriend, and her doctor. They will also speak with the family’s neighbors.
Investigators said the newborn’s body was found in a cupboard in the girl’s Cambil home where she lives with her parents. After learning that their daughter had given birth, the parents found the baby’s body and brought it to the hospital where investigators said it may have died from being smothered.
This unfortunately isn’t the first incident of a teenage mom killing their newborn baby. Last year, 14-year-old Cassidy Goodson was arrested for choking her baby son to death and putting his body in a shoebox. Goodson gave birth at home in the bathroom, running water and covering her mouth with a towel to muffle her moans and confessed to using scissors to pry the baby out of her body. The baby’s body was discovered after Goodson’s mother noticed a foul odor and called the authorities.
Goodson was sentenced to 18 months for the murder of her newborn son after accepting a plea deal. She was initially arrested on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse, but she pleaded out to a lesser charge of manslaughter. A judge was satisfied that Goodson didn’t have a criminal history, and she will serve her sentence in a maximum security prison for juveniles. If she completes her program without any problems, she’ll go before the judge again, be placed on probation, and be released. If she violates the terms of her release, Goodson could be charged as an adult and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
