Beyonce Super Bowl Director Reveals ‘Blind Panic’ He Suffered Through Her Performance
The director behind Beyonce’s stunning Super Bowl half-time performance on Sunday evening, Hamish Hamilton, has been discussing how stressful the occasion was.
Hamilton, who also directed Madonna’s 2012 show and assisted Danny Boyle with the opening ceremony at last year’s Olympic Games in London, told the Guardian, “There is an incredible sense of fear. Then determination, and then blind panic.”
“It is a ludicrous proposition: there are teams of staging units stretching down the tunnel and into the parking lot and thousands of people praying they make it to the right pace in time.”
Hamilton then also added, “We had technical issues. We had a camera on air that just decided to all off its mount – I’ve never had that happen before – but it is the Super Bowl, and we covered it up beautifully.”
Describing his view of the event, Hamilton said, “I’m in a truck watching it happen, and hoping and praying that he stage gets out, [that] the connections are all made, and that everything is in location. Thousands of things can go wrong.”
The director also spoke of his admiration for Beyonce, calling her an”incredibly smart, serene woman,” and adding, “It would be naive to say, ‘Let’s book Beyonce’ and then say to her, ‘This is what you have to do.’ You do not book Beyonce and then tell her what to do. At the end of the day, it is her show.”
Reaction to Beyonce’s performance has been universally positive. The Baltimore Ravens went onto claim the Super Bowl with a 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
