John Mayer has garnered a reputation as a “serial dater” over the years after having relationships with celebrities like Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston. Mayer, who is currently dating Katy Perry, said that he was a “jerk” in the past but is now happy to be turning over a new leaf.
Mayer told CBS :
“I was just a jerk … It’s very liberating when you finally realize it’s impossible to make everyone like you. I wanted everybody to like me. I thought I was one shuck and jive away in every direction.”
This isn’t the first time that Mayer has apologized for being a jerk. During an appearance on The Ellen Show earlier this year Mayer said that he was acting like an idiot during his younger years.
“I lost my head for a little while. I lost touch and I didn’t want to ask for directions … I did a couple really dumb interviews and it woke me up.”
Mayer has said and done plenty of jerky things over the years ( remember that Playboy interview about Jessica Simpson ) but his playboy reputation wasn’t really put into the limelight until Taylor Swift released “Dear John.”
Mayer recently commented on the song saying that he didn’t think he deserved the backlash.
“It made me feel terrible because I didn’t deserve it. (“Dear John” is) cheap songwriting. It’s abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, ‘Wait til he gets a load of this!’ That’s bulls–t.”
