‘Star Wars: Episode 8’ Rumor: Maz Kanata And Benicio Del Toro’s Character Have An Intriguing Connection

As the release of Star Wars: Episode 8 – The Last Jedi draws closer, exciting plot details continue to be uncovered. The latest bits come courtesy of the official Japanese website for the highly-anticipated sequel.

The website features previews of what to expect from each character in the upcoming film, and perhaps the most intriguing and revealing information is about Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o).

It is revealed in her description that she may have a connection to the mysterious new Star Wars: Episode 8 character played by Benicio Del Toro, who is only known at the moment as DJ.

A translation by Google reveals that in Star Wars: Episode 8, Maz Kanata is forced to take a “more active role” in the fight against the First Order. For her part, she will use “her ties to the criminal underworld” to help out. Part of the description, as per Star Wars Net reads, “She will provide crucial assistance to the Resistance in their fight against First Order, making use of every connection she has.”

The abovementioned publication believes that it will be Maz Kanata who will rally round Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) in their journey to the casino city of Canto Bight in Star Wars: Episode 8.

The hard-working Star Wars watcher and YouTuber speculates that it could be through her that the duo will get to DJ in The Last Jedi.

While not much is known about the character, it is being said that he is behind bars when fans will first see him in Star Wars: Episode 8 and that Finn and Rose will have to extract him from there. With that in mind, DJ could very well be one of the “criminal” connections that Maz Kanata will turn to and bring to fight alongside the Resistance.

This is made more probable with the recently released behind-the-scenes footage for The Last Jedi embedded below the article that focuses on the film’s director, Rian Johnson.

There was a scene in the clip that showed Finn and Rose donning First Order uniform believed to be for an undercover mission. Interestingly, they are joined by another man in the same getup.

Media outlets only caught a glimpse of this individual since he is a bit far from the camera in the Star Wars: Episode 8 footage but it is enough to convince them that it is Benicio Del Toro.

This suggests that he could be a First Order officer that Finn and Rose managed to trick, but the more likely possibility is that he is there to help them with the mission, which indicates that he will serve as an ally to the Resistance.

Of course, this preview does not tell the whole story, but it does shed light on what Benicio Del Toro’s character will be doing in Star Wars: Episode 8 since it has been carefully kept under wraps by Disney. Whether or not he will stay loyal to the Resistance all the way is still a subject of debate.

The rest of the descriptions from the Japanese website also reveal that while Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) will be able to improve his Dark Side powers, Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) will still be unimpressed.

It was also hinted that Rey (Daisy Ridley) would be disappointed with her hero, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who ends up “disagreeing with her expectations.”

Star Wars: Episode 8 – The Last Jedi hits the cinemas December 15.
