Ed Sheeran Confirms He Took A Break In 2016 To Battle Substance Abuse

There have been always been rumors that certain musicians have issues with drugs, but now Ed Sheeran confirms he took a break in 2016 to battle substance abuse. Sheeran explains that his overuse of unnamed substances crept up on him. Sheeran said what started as something he would do with others at parties turned into something he was doing on his own. Sheeran is now explaining he tried to take himself “off the grid” in 2016 to get a grip on substance abuse and on his life.

During some of the wilder days, Ed Sheeran ended up with a scar on his face, allegedly as a result of an accident involving Princess Beatrice (the daughter of Prince Andrew and Fergie) and a sword. Ed Sheeran is known as a gentleman who was reluctant to talk about the incident where Princess Beatrice was joking around, attempting to “knight” singer James Blunt with a sword and accidentally cut Ed Sheeran, said a source. Someone at the palace was said to ask all involved to keep it quiet.

“Everyone was totally shocked and apparently Beatrice was very upset. But Ed was the perfect gentleman and told her it was just an accident. However, it became apparent that the wound needed treatment so Ed was taken to hospital [sic]. He had to have stitches put in.”

Singer Ed Sheeran wants fans to know about his struggle, and how easy it is to go from casual use to substance abuse. Sheeran appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show to talk about getting used to fame and living in the public eye.

“I think you need to, when you get into the industry, adjust to [fame], and I didn’t adjust because I was constantly working on tour. And all the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse.”

Sheeran explains that for his health and for his state of mind he realized that he needed to take a step back and take some time for himself. Sheeran then said he was able to make choices on how to progress with his life and his career.

Ed Sheeran explains that the alarm went off when he realized that he wasn’t just using socially anymore and that he was using on his own.

“It all starts off as a party, and then you’re doing it on your own and it’s not, so that was a wake-up call and [I took] a year off.”

Sheeran says he started by ditching his cell phone just after the 2016 Grammy Awards. Sheeran also gives a lot of credit to his girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn who he says helped him get his life back together.

“We live together now, and I think that was a real help grounding me; [I] needed someone to balance me out.”

Recently, Ed Sheeran’s tour was interrupted by a bike accident that caused injuries to both of his arms. Sheeran was in London riding his bike when he got hit by a car. He explains that he got up, shook himself off, and cycled to the pub, not realizing that he had broken each arm in a different place (obviously making it difficult to play the guitar).

“The thing is, when it happened, I got up and was like, ‘That hurt’ and then cycled to the pub. Went home, went to sleep and then woke up at five o’clock in the morning in a lot of pain. And then went to the hospital.”

The bike accident forced Ed Sheeran to cancel the shows in the Asia leg of his world tour.
