‘Tomb Raider’ To Include Multiplayer, GAME Listing Suggests

The core Tomb Raider series never came across as one that would lend itself particularly well to multiplayer of any sort apart from co-op, but Crystal Dynamics may have found a way for the Tomb Raider reboot.

All Games Beta spotted a listing on UK retailer GAME’s website, and the listing made mention of some sort of multiplayer mode for Tomb Raider. The listing has since been removed.

Surprisingly, the listing suggests that there will actually be several multiplayer modes in Tomb Raider. The listing called for players to “survive as a team” by playing “a variety of multiplayer modes as Lara’s Shipmates or Yamatai’s Scavengers.”

Considering how much of a (welcome) departure Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider reboot is from the original series, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see some form of multiplayer included in the game – especially in an industry that loves tacking on multiplayer to just about anything.

As Cinema Blend points out, GAME’s apparently prompt removal of the listing does suggest there may be some merit to it, but it’s impossible to know for sure unless Crystal Dynamics or publisher Square Enix comes out and confirms it. For that, we’ll likely have to wait until next year.

Tomb Raider was originally announced by way of Game Informer in January of 2011, with a projected release date somewhere around the third quarter 2012. Obviously, that didn’t happen – the game was delayed into “early 2013,” which was later narrowed down to March 5, 2013.

The game tells the tale of iconic protagonist Lara Croft in her earlier years, before she had taken a liking to raiding tombs. Croft finds herself shipwrecked and stranded on an island filled with all sorts of things that want to kill her.

What do you think of Tomb Raider? Would you be interested in multiplayer?
