Square Debuts Gift Cards, Ties Them Into Android And iOS 6 Passbook

Credit card processing company Square has debuted gift card offers for anyone willing to send a special gift to their friends, family members, and co-workers.

Just in time for last minute holiday shoppers, the Square gift card program arrives via updates from Square Register and Square Wallet. The update is available to both Google Android and Apple iOS users.

Buyers can purchase the gift cards at any American location where Square Register is being employed by a business. The new system should be a boon to retailers who no longer need to pay for physical gift cards at their locations but can still offer top notch Square gift cards.

Apple iOS 6 devices also receive the added benefit of Passbook integration, which means users don’t have to launch the Square Wallet application or use QR codes found on pieces of paper.

The app update is free, and Square will likely launch a Canadian version of the application in the near future.

The best part of Square Gift Cards might be the ability to search a person’s location, find shops they will love, and then send gift cards with a message directly from your smartphone. Need a last minute present? No problem. Want to send a “cheer up” latte from Starbucks? That’s also doable in real time.

In the meantime, you can watch the video below to see how this new program works and how it can benefit you and your gift receiving friends:
