Memorial Day 2017 is finally here, and those looking to run a few errands or plan an event will need to know what’s open and what’s closed. So if you’re trying to find out whether the bank or post office is open — or looking for something fun to do for free — this Memorial Day, you can find all the answers right here.

As far as holidays go, Memorial Day can be a tricky one. It’s a federal holiday meaning all government offices are closed down, but it’s also an important day for retailers to draw in summer shoppers and supermarkets to accommodate those looking to stock up on cookout staples. That means a mixed bag of destinations that are open, others that are closed, and some that are operating on different hours.

There are also a handful of attractions that are opening up for free on Memorial Day, so if you’re looking for something other than the beach or a backyard cookout, you’ve got some options to consider.

What’s closed Memorial Day 2017?

As noted above, Memorial Day is a federal holiday so offices like the DMV and the post office are closed all day.

Nearly all banks will also be closed on Memorial Day, with GoBankingRates.com compiling a list of those that will be closed. Some of the major ones can be found below.

There may be a handful of exceptions, including banks that operate within supermarkets that sometimes offer limited hours during holidays. This is usually on a case-by-case basis, so you will have to check ahead to see if your bank might have some early hours. There is also the opportunity to conduct some basic banking functions like deposits and fund transfers at banks that have smart ATMs.

In some states (including Massachusetts), liquor stores will also be closed on Memorial Day. In others (including Pennsylvania), they will be operating on limited ours.

What’s open on Memorial Day 2017?

This list is much longer. Aside from government offices and banks, pretty much everywhere else is open on Memorial Day. Restaurants are operating on normal hours and grocery stores will as well, which is great for anyone who needs to make a last-minute pickup before a cookout or picnic.

Nearly all attractions will also be open on Memorial Day, as they are trying to draw in families and kids off from school. That includes museums, theme parks, and movie theaters, many of which will have additional showings early in the day or later for the newly released summer blockbusters.

What’s free on Memorial Day 2017?

So you’ve got your cookout items all planned out, your trip to the bank has been scrapped — now what can you do for a little free fun? If you want a memorable Memorial Day 2017 without spending a lot of money, there are quite a few options.

For veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, there are a ton of options for free and discounted attractions, including amusement parks that offer year-round discounts (via Military.com) and others that are entirely free (including Cedar Point amusement park). There are also some special freebies for veterans on Memorial Day (via Al.com).

For everyone else, there are a number of museums and other attractions opening their doors to the public on Memorial Day, offering free admission for all. If you’re planning a trip and looking for something free, check their website or Twitter page to see if they’re participating in the Memorial Day free-for-all.

Also keep in mind that there could be some other stores and destinations closed on Memorial Day 2017, especially locally owned ones, so it might be best to call ahead before making plans for May 29.
