Memorial Day Post Office Hours: USPS, FedEx, UPS Open Or Closed Monday?

Whether you have Memorial Day off or have to work, there’s always some confusion about what’s open and what’s closed on the Federal holiday. From U.S. Post Office holiday hours, bank closing times, to retail store sales, the holiday signifies the unofficial start of summer with many people prepping for cookouts and trips to the beach.

Before we get to the low-down on the post office, UPS, and FedEx hours (and other important holiday info) let’s take a moment to remember the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. After all, that’s why the Memorial Day holiday is observed on the last Monday in May.

If you are expecting a package or need to ship one out, hours vary for USPS, UPS, and FedEx during the three-day holiday weekend.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management reported that most federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule. If the holiday falls on a weekday, that means most government employees get a paid day off.

That includes your letter carrier and most U.S. Post Office employees, although the Post Bulletin reports that some postal workers work on Sunday and holidays to deliver Amazon packages through an agreement with the online retailer.

All U.S. Postal Service reports that all branch offices will be closed on Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day. Mail won’t be delivered to businesses and residences on Monday, but will resume on Tuesday, May 30.

However, there is an exception for some Amazon packages that are scheduled for Monday delivery. Check with Amazon to get tracking details just to be sure.

If you want to drop a package off on Monday, the doors will be closed to all branches, but there are plenty of blue USPS drop boxes across the nation. Use this handy USPS collection box finder to find one near you. Print out postage with U.S. Postal Service’s Click-and-Ship online shipping service. Just keep in mind, your letter or package won’t be on its way to its recipient until Tuesday when the U.S. Postal Service resumes operations.

If you are shipping by UPS or FedEx, or are expecting a package from the popular delivery services, here’s what you need to know about their Memorial Day schedules.

Although UPS and FedEx deliver on many Federal holidays, Memorial Day isn’t one of them. The holiday schedules for both delivery companies indicate that they will be closed for business on Monday, May 29. However, there are a few exceptions including UPS Express Critical service and FedEx Custom Critical deliveries.

What else is open (or closed) on Memorial Day?

Other than mail delivery, many people are often unsure of their bank’s holiday hours. Some banks, including TD Bank, stay open on many Federal holidays including Veterans Day, Presidents’ Day, and Columbus Day. However, Memorial Day seems to be a holiday that most banks close down for the day. It’s always a good idea to call ahead to be sure as some banks open their supermarket branches on holidays, but hours are usually limited.

Retail stores and restaurants are normally open on Memorial Day. After all, it’s a big weekend for sales, especially at mall stores like Old Navy, American Eagle, Pink, and other popular retailers. Deal News has a rundown of the best holiday sales, including some tips on what the best buys are this weekend.

“Clothing sales accounted for about 41% of all the Memorial Day deals last year. Expect to see anywhere from 20% to 90% off at stores like Uniqlo, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Vera Bradley, Hollister, PacSun, and Eddie Bauer.”

And for those who are getting ready to throw a cookout or holiday weekend party, Walmart, Target, and most supermarkets will be open on Monday, although hours may be limited at many retailers. However, all Walmart Superstores are open ’round the clock, so that’s always a sure bet if you need last minute groceries or party goods.
