Watch: Kate McKinnon Channels Hillary Clinton In ‘SNL’ ‘Love Actually’ Skit

Just a little over a week before Christmas, Kate McKinnon delivered a perfect Hillary Clinton impersonation while channeling a holiday classic, “Love Actually.” MacKinnon, the SNL and Ghostbusters(2016) star, has delivered a goofy Clinton impersonation for months, but in SNL‘s most recent episode, McKinnon as Clinton makes an appeal to Electoral College voters.

The Electoral College is scheduled to cast their votes Monday, December 19. There has been discontent among Electoral College voters as some people have challenged the rule that they have to vote for the candidate that won the popular vote in their state.

Electoral College voters who oppose the popular vote candidate have the option of voting for another person. These voters are called “faithless electors, democratic” and there has been a significant increase since the November 8 election.

For the 2016 election, there has been a movement among Electoral College voters in California, Colorado, and a handful of other blue states to not be required to vote for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. According to Politico, half the Democratic electors have vowed to try and block Donald Trump from winning the Electoral College.

Although Clinton won the popular vote nationally, she still lost to Republican candidate and now President-elect Trump based on Electoral College votes. Although Clinton technically already lost, representatives in blue states are still required to vote for her, essentially casting a lame duck vote.

Although Donald Trump has curried favor with many republican Electoral College voters, there are a few Republican voters who have vowed to oppose Trump for Monday’s vote. Christopher Suprun, an Electoral College voter from Texas, wrote a piece for the New York Times explaining why he cannot support Trump and why he is opting for a more moderate option, such as Ohio Governor John Kasich.

Working within the timeliness of Christmas and Monday’s Electoral College vote, SNL and McKinnon delivered a perfect summary of the situation in last night’s sketch. The premise evoked a now classic Christmas story, Love Actually. McKinnon, as Clinton, shows up on Cecily Strong’s doorstep in an homage to the scene between Andrew Lincoln and Keira Knightly in the 2003 British romantic comedy.

Instead of declaring love, like in the original Love Actually, McKinnon as Clinton makes one final plea to Strong, an Electoral College voter. McKinnon reveals cue cards as a recording of Christmas carols play in the background, which perfectly summarizes the anxieties and hesitations that many Electoral College voters and the public at large have about President-elect Trump.

McKinnon also poked fun at Clinton, starting out with cue cards that detailed some of Clinton’s go-to lines during the campaign. Clinton often brought up her involvement with the Children’s Defense Fund in the 1970s, her experience as first lady, her term as a New York Senator, and eventually her career as Secretary of State. However, Strong rushed McKinnon through the experience cards echoing most of America’s fatigue with the subject.

The best part of the SNL skit comes when McKinnon reveals cards that say, “You’re supposed to vote for Donald Trump on December 19… But bish… he cray.” McKinnon as Clinton, using the cue cards, went over Trump refusing security briefings, antagonizing China, and critiquing Trump’s cabinet appointees as being anti-gay, anti-environment, and anti-woman. McKinnon, although comically exaggerated, went over a laundry list of grievances against President-elect Trump. An especially disturbing list, considering the Republican candidate hasn’t even taken office yet and he’s already caused global upheaval.

At the end of the skit, McKinnon implores the Electoral College voter to vote for literally anyone else, offering options such as, “John Kasich, Tom Hanks, Zendaya, The Rock,” and finally, “a rock.”

McKinnon as Clinton made the Electoral College friction palatable and understandable to everyday Americans who watch SNL. Plus, McKinnon helps remind the public of Clinton, who has made virtually no public appearance since her stunning loss in November.

President-elect Trump, who has criticized SNL in the past as being biased, has refrained from commenting on Twitter about the episode at this time. Instead, he has continued to tweet disparaging things about China and a United States drone that was captured overseas.
