‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Star Charlie Hunnam Is Willing To Appear In ‘Mayans MC’ – Will Kurt Sutter Make It Happen?
Charlie Hunnam has come to terms with the fate of Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy. Although his character died during the Season 7 finale, Hunnam told TMZ (see the entire interview below) that he is willing to reprise the role on Kurt Sutter’s new spin-off, Mayans MC.
Will Hunnam return to Sutter’s biker world in Mayans MC?
The Daily Mail is reporting that Hunnam made the comments shortly after a hike in Runyon Canyon in Los Angeles this week. The actor looked high in spirits as he walked along and answered questions. Hunnam wore light sweat pants and a hoodie for the hike, finishing off his casual look with a dark blue beanie.
Sutter crushed any hope of Hunnam reprising the role of Jax Teller when the character drove in front of a semi in the series finale of Sons of Anarchy. While the character is dead, he could make an appearance in a flashback or dream, and Hunnam would be thrilled to make it happen.
Hunnam, unfortunately, could not confirm his involvement in Mayans MC. He did, however, admit that he knows nothing about the spin-off, which doesn’t bode well for a future reprisal.
“Listen, if they call me… if they want me to do a little dream sequence… I’ll do anything for Jax, I love that guy, but I think I’m dead,” Hunnam shared.
Sons of Anarchy wrapped its final season in 2014. Mayans MC is expected to pick up where the show left off, but focus on biker culture through the lens of Latinos. It isn’t clear how many Sons of Anarchy characters will appear on the new show, which focuses on EZ Reyes’ charter on the border of California and Mexico.
After the end of Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam expanded his career on the big screens. The actor is currently working on several projects and will appear in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and The Lost City of Z.
While Hunnam enjoys entertaining fans, Just Jared stated that he prefers to stay away from social media. For the most part, Hunnam wants his fans to enjoy his work and avoid being viewed as a “pretentious d***head.”
“You start to talk about serious stuff and sound like a pretentious d***head, but I really just want the relationship I have with the world just to be my work,” he explained.
While Sutter has yet to reveal any casting details about the spin-off, Hollywood Life is reporting that he hired Elgin James to help write the script. With the series focusing on Latino culture, Sutter wasn’t sure he could do justice to the story without some outside help.
“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice,” Sutter shared. “Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”
Sutter continued: “It’s the same [biker] subculture, but it’d be interesting to see the influences of [Hispanic] culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand. I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn’t step on the mythology that’s already been told. It doesn’t mean that there couldn’t be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed. I wouldn’t want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that… My intent is, over the hiatus I’ll initiate a script for the pilot and take it from there.”
Production for Mayans MC is expected to begin in early 2017. According to We Got This Covered, FX has already purchased a pilot episode for the spin-off. Given the success of Sons of Anarchy, Mayans MC has a lot of potential, even if Hunnam doesn’t make a cameo.
