WWE News: WWE Firmly Set On John Cena Vs The Undertaker At ‘WrestleMania 33’
It has been rumored for some time now that John Cena would face The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33, but a lot of things kept getting in the way of that this year. First and foremost, John Cena is seeking his 16th WWE World Title, which would tie him for the most of all-time with Ric Flair. Some assumed that he would face AJ Styles and beat his rival to accomplish this goal on the grandest stage of them all.
It would be a great plan theoretically considering Cena is certainly worthy of the win. Additionally, it is a huge event that would be worthy of the win. However, the biggest issue is that this very well could be Undertaker’s last match at WrestleMania, and the only one who is truly worthy of working with him would be John Cena. Undertaker has worked at WrestleMania against some of the greatest of all time: Jimmy Snuka, Kane, Triple H, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, Brock Lesnar, CM Punk, and many more.
Adding John Cena to that list, win or lose, would be a great accomplishment for his career. It is likely that The Undertaker asked for John Cena, which is why it is on the books to begin with. It was rumored earlier this year that the two would work together at WrestleMania 32, but due to the several injuries, Cena was unable to work a match at the event. He did show up to help The Rock against The Wyatt Family, however.
The question remains: Could we still see John Cena vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33? According to Ringside News, the answer is yes. There were rumors of the match being in jeopardy for the things mentioned above, combined with a recent conversation Cena had about part-time wrestlers getting more spotlight than full-time talent with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.
Cena was unhappy with the move made by the WWE, and he let it be known to McMahon that it wasn’t right. He also did not like that they were earning a significant amount of money for very little dates in comparison to those who work all the time for WWE. Cena is still the top earner in WWE, averaging about $10 million a year. However, for half the work, guys like Brock Lesnar and Goldberg earn $5 million or more per year before merchandise is even factored in.
Apparently, the conversation with John Cena and Vince McMahon got to such a point that Vince was worried Cena was not going to come back. This led to him having a discussion with the creative staff about other plans for The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33. Obviously, McMahon must keep the ship moving and cannot stop just because of one person.
Cena is slowly being fazed out, but WWE does not want him to go anytime soon. They simply do not want him to be the main focus as often. He is also on a part-time schedule with WWE, but this is mostly for wrestling. He still does a lot of media appearances for WWE on off days, so he works a great deal even as a technically part-time man.
The plan for John Cena is still on. He should still be working with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33 this year. Rumor has it that they could very well main event the show. There is some speculation that Undertaker will let it be known that this is his last match with WWE before the event, and if that does occur, then WWE has no real choice but to have the two main event the show. We shall see if that happens, but the match itself seems pretty set right now.
