‘The Walking Dead’ Season 7 Episode 4 Proves NBC’s ‘The Office’ Wrong, Daryl Dixon’s ‘Outmoded’ Morse Code Blinking Decoded By Fans?

The Walking Dead fans have been speculating on the idea that Daryl Dixon is sending Rick Grimes a message when he first returns with Negan to Alexandria. When the camera pans over to Daryl at the entrance to the community, he is seen blinking in an obvious fashion, as if it were a timed pattern.

Rick glares at Dixon in return and then looks back at Negan. Of course, that could have been the look of fear, too. But in another part of the show in Rick’s home, there hangs a large American Morse Code Sign. The Walking Dead fans started a buzz that this could have been an Easter egg indicating that Daryl Dixon was trying to communicate to Rick non-verbally. From the looks of it, they think they’ve figured out the message, according to ComicBook.

Before The Walking Dead, There Was The Office

This isn’t the first time a TV show used Morse code blinking, but any fans NBC’s The Office may recall an episode where Pam and Jim Halpert where first communicating via their buttons on their pens when Dwight caught on to what they were doing. He put on a headset and they circumvented this by blinking messages about Dwight.

Although Jim said it’s a “very outmoded and very unnecessary form of communication,” this is proven wrong by Daryl, at least in the zombie apocalypse. Of course, The Office has shown Dwight to have the necessary survival skills to survive in such an environment and not to be confused with The Walking Dead’s Dwight.

There are theories that Daryl’s blinking may have been a nervous tick due to the tortures he had to endure which included dog food sandwiches, a song replaying on a loop, and water deprivation. A real life hero, the late Jeremiah Denton demonstrated a method where he delivered the word “T-O-R-T-U-R-E” by blinking while he was a POW in North Vietnam, according to The Huffington Post.

The Walking Dead fans had their theories about Season 7’s Episode 4 show. They deciphered Daryl’s blinking as, “I-E-A-S-T”, indicating his location, but east of where? Alexandria? Hilltop Colony? There were other theories that the distance of six miles was somewhere in the message.

Is The Board Set And The Pieces Moving?

Nevertheless, Rick Grimes has been known to keep things secret from anyone and everyone and only to himself. For a long time, he kept his secret about Judith Grimes for years until he finally revealed it in Season 7 Episode 4’s “Service” premiere. Does this same episode mark the exposure of one secret and the coveting of a new one?

The Walking Dead Season 7 seems to be going through a gradual build as Michonne seems to be ready to take on the Saviors. Maggie is ready with a vengeance with Sasha having her back. Rosita went to Eugene to make bullets, so there seems to be preparatory makings of a war. Rick Grimes seems to have completely submitted to Negan’s reign; however, if this Morse code thing is legit, this could light a fire underneath the Ricktatorship. He was about to go hog wild with Lucille at the gate, but he probably subsided not because of his fear of Negan, but because he may be patiently waiting.

Andrew Lincoln referred to “quiet heroism” in an interview, so perhaps Rick will make his move eventually depending on how things unfold. Right now, it looks like he’ll keep his cards close.

There is no location known for Negan’s Sanctuary, so perhaps this little speculative Easter egg may open the door and connect the communities together in a feud forthcoming.

Consider this, Morgan is prepping a Knight Of The Kingdom in hand-to-hand combat which could open up training for the rest of that community, Rosita is emphatic about having Eugene make ammunition for whatever firearms are leftover, and next is The Hilltop Colony. That’s to be determined though in Episode 5’s “Go Getters.”

Find out this Sunday on AMC network’s The Walking Dead at 9 p.m. EST. Things are looking interesting for Season 7 as the story slowly builds.
