‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’ — Lady Gaga’s Character Gets A Name, But What Does This Mean For Season 6 Of ‘AHS’?

While Lady Gaga’s character in FX’s American Horror Story: Roanoke remained nameless on IMDb up until recently, it seems her name had been leaked via other means. Who is Gaga’s character, and what does this mean for subsequent episodes of AHS?

Spoiler alert: This article discusses Episode 4 of Season 6 of FX’s American Horror Story. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Lady Gaga’s character in American Horror Story: Roanoke featured quite prominently in last week’s Episode 4. However, as was pointed out in this previous Inquisitr article that tried to work out who her character was, Gaga still remained nameless. However, since the publication of that article, many American Horror Story fans have since pointed out that if you watch AHS with the closed captions on, Lady Gaga’s character’s name was actually revealed last week.

Also, since that article appeared, IMDb updated Lady Gaga’s character name as “Witch of the Woods.” However, for those AHS fans who watch the show with the closed captions on, Lady Gaga’s character appeared as Scathach. So, who is Scathach?

Lady Gaga’s character is supposed to have lived sometime around 200 BCE and originates in Scotland. According to Undiscovered Scotland, in Gaelic, Scathach means “shadowy.” The history of Scathach mainly originates from the Red Branch Cycle, “a collection of medieval Irish heroic legends and sagas that forms one of the four great cycles of Irish mythology.”

While Lady Gaga’s character in American Horror Story: Roanoke appears to be, as IMDb lists her, a “witch of the woods,” according to Scottish legends, Scathach was actually a warrior woman who was known to be a martial arts trainer. Most notably, according to Britannica, she trained men in the art of pole-vaulting, underwater fighting, and combat with a barbed harpoon. Scathach lived on an island “in an impregnable castle.” While, traditionally, her actual location was the Isle of Skye, in American Horror Story, it seems her location has been cast as Roanoke and her “impregnable castle” the wretched place Matt and Shelby currently own.

Pantheon also lists Scathach as a woman who not only trained men in the arts of war, but in the “friendship of her thighs.” In Episode 3 of American Horror Story: Roanoke, this was certainly the case when she was seen having sex with Matt. There are two versions of whether Lady Gaga’s character will bear children. Once source states she will bear two sons, Cet and Cuar, while the other says she will give birth to three girls, Lasair, Inghean Bhuidhe, and Latiaran. In the instance of her bearing sons, the father was an unknown, and with the story involving her bearing daughters, the father was a man named Douglas. Could Gaga’s character have been trying to bear children with Matt?

So far, in Episode 4 of AHS, it was revealed Lady Gaga’s character originally landed on American soil thanks to a sea voyage. According to an interview with Matt (Andre Holland), done for the fictional show within AHS, My Roanoke Nightmare, Gaga’s character was “an English girl once, a descendant of the Druids and their Roman conquerors.” While Scotland is not mentioned, she was, originally, in a similar part of the world.

Undiscovered Scotland also lists Lady Gaga’s character, Scathach, as, potentially, the “Celtic goddess of the dead, ensuring the passage of those killed in battle to Tír na nÓg, the Land of Eternal Youth and the most popular of the Otherworlds in Celtic mythology.” Considering Gaga’s character insists on a yearly blood sacrifice from Thomasin (Kathy Bates) in American Horror Story: Roanoke, this version of Scathach seems fitting.

But what will this mean for the other characters in American Horror Story: Roanoke moving forward in Season 6? The fact that Lady Gaga’s character is most known as a warrior goddess could indicate a fierce battle is on the horizon. Considering AHS’s co-creator, Ryan Murphy, also keeps suggesting Episode 6 of American Horror Story: Roanoke will turn the show on its head, could a battle in the Otherworlds be expected? Only by tuning into Season 6 of American Horror Story: Roanoke will reveal the fate of Lady Gaga’s, Scathach, and the other characters residing in the house at Roanoke.
