Yankee Stadium to host Bowl Game?

About the last thing College Football needs is yet another Bowl game. There are already far too many of those. That is why this news is a little surprising. Apparently Big Ten Officials and the New York Yankees are in discussions to bring a Big Ten Bowl game to new Yankee Stadium.

Currently in college football there are the five bowl games that compose the BCS, and 29 other bowl games. It seems that the market for Bowl Gems has dried up somewhat, especially with the NHL putting on their outdoor hockey games on the traditional day for College Bowl Games New Years Day.

Of course when we stop to think the Yankees and the City of New York paid 1.1 billion dollars to build the new stadium, one can understand the desire to host as many events as possible to help pay the bills for the stadium. While the Yankees will generate around 500 million dollars in revenue they did lose Bank of America as a big time corporate sponsor and the 20 million dollars in revenue that sponsorship would have generated.

However hosting a Big Ten Bowl game in New York doesn’t seem to make the most sense. While the Big Apple offers a slew of media and attention there is not a strong Big Ten fan base within the city. The closest Big Ten School to New York City is Penn State. It seems Big Ten fans would have to ravel, at great expense to a New York City Big Ten Bowl game.
