Shawn Mendes Talks Dating Camila Cabello, Admits They Had An ‘Instant Connection’

Shawn Mendes is speaking out about dating Fifth Harmony star Camila Cabello and dishing on their “instant connection.”

Mendes spoke out about widespread rumors suggesting he and Camila are dating in a new interview with People, where the “Stitches” singer confirmed that despite the speculation that’s surrounded himself and the Fifth Harmony singer for months, he and Cabello never actually got romantic.

Shawn did seriously gush over Camila in a new interview with the magazine, but quickly shot down rumors suggesting that he and Cabello were once a couple.

“A thing? No, we weren’t, actually,” Mendes hit back after fans once again began to speculate that he and the Fifth Harmony star were dating. “We’re just really close friends.”

“We’re not dating — nor did we,” Shawn continued amid the latest round of dating reports, but admitted that the constant dating rumors surrounding them actually aren’t that awkward for the two who grew close while Mendes and Fifth Harmony toured with Austin Mahone in 2015.

“We’re so close with each other that we could say anything, and it wouldn’t make a difference,” Shawn said of how he and Cabello deal with the dating speculation that surrounds their relationship. “That’s a friendship that you have to hold on to forever,” Mendes added.

But while Shawn is now putting an end to the Cabello dating reports, he continued to gush over Camila in the interview a year after the two musicians teamed up with for their 2015 duet “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

“[Camila] is one of those people who is just very easy to connect with and still, to this day, is one of my greatest friends,” Mendes told People of Cabello. “You find that instant connection with people, and she’s one of them.”

Shawn Mendes also went on to tease that he and Camila Cabello could well be spending a lot more time together in the coming months, describing Cabello as being a “f****** great writer” before teasing that he and the Fifth Harmony singer will likely be writing more songs together in the not too distant future.

“Even if we just wrote for other people, I would be happy to do that because she’s such a thrill to write with and work with,” said Shawn of Camila.

Mendes’ admission that he and Camila supposedly actually never dated will likely come as a shock to fans after Shawn seemingly confirmed that he and Cabello were once an item during a candid interview with Britain’s Capital FM last month.

While Shawn has shut down the dating rumors in the past, this time Mendes instead played coy when quizzed about Camila during a game in which he was challenged not to lie.

After Mendes truthfully answered a number of less probing questions, including revealing the last thing he Googled, a fan then hit Shawn with a pretty personal dating question during the September 15 interview.

The fan asked Mendes during the interview, “Was Camila Cabello a good kisser?” to which Shawn had a seriously coy but telling response.

Rather than shutting down the dating rumors once again, Mendes instead replied with a smile, “I don’t know… I don’t know that that means. She has too strong of a British accent. I couldn’t understand her.”

Fans were quick to take Shawn’s coy response as confirmation that he and Fifth Harmony’s Camila were dating at one point after E! News first claimed that Mendes and Cabello were getting cozy after growing close on their joint tour one year ago.

The site reported at the time that Shawn and Camila were officially dating after growing close on tour and confirmed that Cabello and Mendes “really like each other and laugh nonstop when they’re together.”
