‘WWE CWC’: Cruiserweight Classic Tournament Round Two — Is Triple H Offering Cedric Alexander A Contract?

While most of the world is focused on the international athletic competition in Rio for the 2016 Summer Olympics, the WWE Universe is focused on the CWC. In the inaugural Cruiserweight Classic tournament, 32 competitors represented 16 countries. With Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley on the verge of introducing a cruiserweight division to Monday Night Raw, every wrestler in the tournament hopes to turn some heads and make a name for themselves in this tournament.

As Round 2 began on WWE CWC, 45-year-old veteran Tajiri — The Japanese Buzzsaw — delivered some brutal offense to Mexico’s Gran Metalik. In the end, however, Tajiri’s experience and ring prowess weren’t enough to overcome the high-flying offense of Metalik. In the main event, tournament favorite Kota Ibushi did Japan proud when he defeated the American-made Cedric Alexander in what was likely the most anticipated match of Round 2. The bout was so good that Triple H was forced to come out and greet Cedric Alexander as the Orlando crowd made it very clear that they’d like to see him as a regular performer on WWE NXT.

Note: The following contains the full results and spoilers for the episode of WWE CWC that first aired on the WWE Network on August 10.

WWE Cruiserweight Classic Round 2 Results: 8/10/16

The following matches and segments for the fifth episode of WWE CWC were taped at Full Sail University on Thursday, July 14. A strong emphasis is being placed on each competitor’s country of origin. Countries represented on this two-match episode include Japan, Mexico, and the U.S. Daniel Bryan and Mauro Ranallo provided commentary.

Gran Metalik (Mexico) Defeated Tajiri (Japan)

Since many of these wrestlers are still unknown to the vast majority of the WWE Universe — and may very well be on their way to a WWE contract — episodes of WWE CWC still preface each match with a video package highlighting both competitors. This week, Tajiri noted that being a 24-year veteran of the sport means his wrestling career is older than many of the entrants in the Cruiserweight Classic. Despite being eliminated by Gran Metalik in the second round, Tajiri’s experience with WWE in the past (he has been a U.S. Champion, Tag Team Champion, and multiple-time Cruiserweight/Light Heavyweight Champion) means he could easily show up again as the division is slowly reintroduced to WWE programming.

Kota Ibushi (Japan) Defeated Cedric Alexander (USA)

Even though they have more wrestlers in the tournament than any other country, Team USA didn’t make it into Round 3 on day one of the second round. In an absolutely phenomenal match, both Cedric Alexander and Kota Ibushi left everything in the ring. While Corey Graves continually reminds viewers that Kota Ibushi is the odds-on favorite to win the tourney, Alexander had everyone in attendance believing that he could pull off the upset. When the match was over, the crowd began to chant “Please sign Cedric!” until WWE’s executive vice president came out and also acknowledged the incredible match. While no official word has been leaked about a contract for Alexander, it seems highly unlikely that WWE would air that footage if they didn’t fully expect to see Alexander in a WWE or NXT ring in the very near future.

These WWE Cruiserweight Classic results have been corroborated by WWE’s official CWC page.
