‘DWTS’ Season 23 Cast: Olympian Michael Phelps Asked To Appear On ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Olympian Michael Phelps was asked to compete on Dancing with the Stars Season 23. Will the iconic swimmer dive into some sizzling routines on the DWTS ballroom floor?

Phelps is currently in Rio competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics, so putting on a pair of dance shoes isn’t exactly high on his list of priorities! The swimmer is serious about focusing on his legacy as the world’s best swimmer. He currently has 22 Olympic medals, with 16 of those being gold medals.

A source reveals that Phelps was asked to appear on Dancing with the Stars for the upcoming fall season, and he didn’t exactly jump at the chance.

Michael has been asked before (to do DWTS) and he was recently asked [to compete in] the upcoming season,” the source tells Hollywood Life. “And though he has considered it, he doesn’t want to do it; he wants his legacy to be in the pool and not on the dance floor.”

Other Olympians have competed on DWTS. The former cast members who did exceptionally well and won their season of the show include ice speed skater Apolo Ohno and ice skating stars Kristi Yamaguchi and Meryl Davis.

Star athletes also marking their Dancing with the Stars cast debut include Metta World Peace, NHL player Sean Avery, and Olympic bobsledder Lolo Jones. Those three didn’t do so well in their respective seasons on the show.

The show is known for attracting some famous athletes, but Michael Phelps requires a little more coaxing it sounds like.

There are plenty of rumors to go around about which stars will make up the DWTS Season 23 cast. Several reports have indicated that Bachelorette star JoJo Fletcher may appear, as well as Teresa Giudice from The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Latin Post reports that the regular cast of DWTS will be part of the show. They include co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews, as well as longtime judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli.

The Inquisitr recently ran down a list of names suspected to be on the final roster when the official DWTS cast is announced. Those possible contestants include former Bachelor New Zealand star Jordan Mauger, and ESPN’s The Coach co-host and former WWE broadcaster/star Jonathan Coachman. Dominic Bowden, who’s hosting E!’s The Hype, spoke about making a comeback on DWTS for Season 23.

It was just confirmed that Derek Hough won’t be competing on Dancing with the Stars, because he’s busy working on NBC’s Hairspray Live! He took a break from Season 22. His sister and two-time Mirrorball winner, Julianne Hough, may come on as a guest judge for a few competitions in Season 23, according to several reports.

The show will feature additional guest judges that are said to include Shakira and Pitbull.

Right now, Michael Phelps has one thing on his mind and that’s to win more gold medals at the Games in Rio. When it’s all said and done, will he reconsider competing on DWTS Season 23, adding to its ever-expanding roster of Olympic athletes? At that time, he may warm up to the idea a little more. If not, there’s no ruling out the next season!

A good number of star athletes enjoy the relevancy they bring to other projects besides the sports they excel at. DWTS is a good platform for past and current Olympians to shine their celebrity status.

Dancing with the Stars Season 23 premieres on ABC Monday, September 12 at 8 p.m., ET/PT.
