‘Today’ Show’s Dylan Dreyer Surprises With Baby News And Reveals The Gender
Today meteorologist Dylan Dreyer revealed to hosts and viewers that she’s pregnant with her first child, confessing that keeping a secret is a difficult task for her, just as it is with her husband, NBC Nightly News cameraman, Brian Fichera. The couple has been married since 2012, having previously become involved while working at the same Boston station, but didn’t want to have children right away. Instead, Dreyer and Fichera chose to wait.
Today meteorologist Dylan Dreyer Shares The Happy News And Reveals The Gender Of Her Baby
Dylan revealed the news of her pregnancy with Today show hosts and viewers on Friday, sharing that the baby would be a first for Brian and herself. Dreyer also shared the news that the baby would be a boy. Dylan revealed the news of the gender to her husband by filling balloons with blue confetti, which Dreyer had Brian pop with a pin.
“We can’t do surprises in our family, so I found out what I was having right away,” Dreyer admitted.
The news of Dylan’s pregnancy was shared during the Today show’s trending segment and the hosts threw Dreyer a surprise baby shower, presenting her with gifts and bringing Fichera onto the show as an added surprise.
“We weren’t in a rush to have kids and, to be honest, there was a time when we declared we never wanted kids,” revealed Dreyer in a blog post. “Then one day we both looked at each other and said ‘I want a baby!’ As usual, we were on the same page and it all just seemed right.”
Recognizing that their son is due for a September birth, Dylan joked that maternity leave might get her out of covering hazardous winter weather.
“We didn’t plan the timing of a December baby to get out of winter storm coverage … I swear!”
Dylan Dreyer Admits She’s Always Had Trouble Keeping Her Emotions In Check
Ms. Dreyer says she was reluctant to let herself get excited after taking a home pregnancy test, even though her husband was ecstatic as soon as he heard the news. Instead, Dylan wanted to wait for a doctor to confirm the news. That kind of pragmatism keeps Dylan from getting flooded with emotions only to be disappointed later, but the Today show personality admits she’s not always so sensible, when it comes to keeping a leash on her feelings. In fact, Dylan once burst into laughter, while on the air.
“That happened in Rhode Island. It was daylight saving time. I was on-air, and I said, ‘Don’t forget to turn your clocks back,’ except that I left the ‘l’ out of ‘clock.’ As immature as can be, I burst out laughing so hard. I didn’t even pull it together,” reveals Dreyer. “I just said, ‘I need to stop talking right now,’ and we went to a commercial.”
That certainly wasn’t the only mistake Dreyer has ever made, and the meteorologist admits that mistakes do happen, especially when predicting weather patterns, but she also feels the public doesn’t give them enough credit, when meteorologists are accurate.
“In general, we don’t get enough credit for being right, because everybody focuses on the mistakes. I’d say we’re right more often than wrong, but I’m sure a lot of people would disagree,” Dylan says with a laugh.
Dreyer also recalls her scariest experience in reporting the weather. It was her first time covering a tropical weather event, a Category 3 hurricane in Bermuda. The Today show meteorologist says she was in her hotel room and recalls the windows rattling and bowing under the pressure of the storm. She says she was so terrified that she spent the night in the room’s bathroom. Later, colleagues confirmed that sleeping in a bathtub is the safest course of action.
