America Will Take Being ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ Over Being Made Great Again

Hardcore comedy fans will be glad to know that Eddy and Patsy will be making America “Absolutely Fabulous” months before Donald Trump tries to “Make It Great Again,” because on July 22, fans of the over-the-top hit series will be treated to a two-hour set of new adventures of the iconic characters when the Absolutely Fabulous movie hits theaters this side of the Atlantic.

A new featurette was released this week that preps those who may not be familiar with the show, weeks ahead of the Absolutely Fabulous movie release, which ended as a series in 2012.

The British comedy series originally started as a sketch in a comedy show in 1987 called French & Saunders before writer and comedian Jennifer Saunders spun it into a series in 1992 co-staring Joanna Lumley.

The actors play two life-long friends who are in the fashion industry and are both recklessly offensive and end up getting themselves into ridiculous situations.

Apparently the show itself constantly became an extension of potential movie efforts, as Saunders had been talking about turning the series into an Absolutely Fabulous movie since 1995, only to keep writing them into episodes.

It’s also been said that she would normally write an episode the night before they would shoot it and only once did she write a script for the show well ahead of time — for the pilot episode.

But it would appear that Saunders still works best under pressure as it’s been said that she only considered making the movie recently when her comedy partner, Dawn French, bet her £100,000, that she wouldn’t have a script in her hands by the end of 2015.

As the movie is marketed and getting ready to be released, The Sun is reporting that Australian singer Kylie Minogue has recorded her own version of the Absolutely Fabulous theme for the upcoming movie.

Minogue, best-known for her song “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” in 2001, is apparently a huge fan of the Absolutely Fabulous series and was incredibly excited to do her version of the theme.

The Sun reports that the studio session to record the track “This Wheel’s On Fire” was kept secret, similar to how some of the celebrity cameos made it into the movie, which reportedly includes comedian Ruby Wax, who first featured Lumley in a sketch in 1992 on her show Don’t Miss Wax, which gave Jennifer Saunders the idea to cast her as Patsy before Absolutely Fabulous first aired.

The song itself was originally written and performed by none other than American singer Bob Dylan in 1974.

And the show was not only a hit overseas, but it picked up in the states as well and since the show’s immense popularity, similar to shows like The Office, many have been wanting to make different versions of the show including Roseanne Barr who nearly remade the show in America with other actors playing the parts of Eddy and Patsy.

At the very least she was able to write in the Absolutely Fabulous characters into an episode of her show as seen here.

Inquisitr also wrote briefly back in 2009 that producers had made a second attempt to green-light an American remake of the series, but the project never got off the ground.

The show spent more time being shot in the 1992-95 period where what followed were promises by Saunders to not make the show again, only to come back and add more episodes over time until 2012.

Absolutely Fabulous has since only existed in repeats, and between the U.K. and America, the delay of episodes in the U.S. followed two-years after they had originally aired. Much the same way, the film will be released on July 1 in the U.K. before it comes to America.
