Margot Robbie Helps Harley Quinn Get A Spinoff Movie, Birds Of Prey And Batgirl Rumored To Join

Harley Quinn may be getting much more time on the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Margot Robbie apparently has helped influence Warner Bros. to consider giving Harley Quinn a spin-off film in the DC Extended Universe.

Margot Robbie will be making her cinematic debut as the character of Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad this August, and it looks like the character could be getting more screen time in events that take place after that film. But Quinn wouldn’t be in it by herself, rather, she apparently could be joined by a collection of other female heroines in the DC universe such as the Birds of Prey as well as Batgirl. If this does end up happening, this suggests that Harley Quinn becomes a hero instead of an anti-hero or a straightforward villain. Warner Bros. has yet to release an official statement regarding this news.

But fans of Harley Quinn and the whole DC universe might have Robbie herself to thank. When the Wolf of Wallstreet actress first got the role, she began reading more of the comics and absorbing the character’s history, and she completely fell in love with the source material. Not only did she come to really love Quinn, but so many other female characters in the DC universe as well. It seems that Robbie then approached Warner Bros. to discuss the possibility of Quinn being in her own spinoff film, along with other DC female characters. The project apparently already has a writer, who is unknown as of right now, but they were brought in by Robbie herself and is a female.

This DC spin-off project will provide the DC Extended Universe with even more female superheroes and villains, which is certainly a smart decision for the studio. They’re going to be releasing Wonder Woman’s solo film next year before Marvel Studios can unveil Captain Marvel, their first female hero-led film. More specifically, it sounds like this could be a passion project for Robbie, as she will more than likely be a producer on the film, as well as starring in it. And Margot definitely appears to be quite passionate about the role.

“Harley is creepy, violent, crazy — all of the things that I aspire to be!,” Robbie has said of the character. “No. It’s the fun of living vicariously through someone who is doing things that I would never do in real life.”

This is the first time the character of Harley Quinn will be appearing in a film, and there are millions of comic book fangirls and fanboys who don’t want to be let down.

“Yeah, I guess it’s intimidating because there’s obviously a lot of people I want to please, and a character I have to do justice,” Margot told MTV News. “But it’s a challenge, I’m definitely up for it, and hopefully I don’t disappoint.”

Harley Quinn, whose real name is Harleen Frances Quinzel, was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for the Batman: The Animated Series in September of 1992. In 1993, Harley made her first appearance in the comics with The Batman Adventures #12, and after that, she became a beloved character. In ’94, Dini gave Quinn a backstory in Mad Love, one which had Harley as an Arkham Asylum psychiatrist who begins to slowly lose her mind and fall in love with the Joker as she is treating him.

Along with Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie will also appear in this summer’s The Legend of Tarzan.
