Sawyer Fredericks Returns To ‘The Voice’ Stage Tuesday To Perform ‘4 Pockets’

Sawyer Fredericks will return to The Voice stage on Tuesday night, where he will perform his newest single, “4 Pockets.” The song is the second single from his upcoming album, A Good Storm, which will be available on May 13.

Sawyer Fredericks recently talked to Yahoo Music about “4 Pockets.” The 17-year-old folk artist said he actually wrote the song when he was only 14-years-old, and has perfected it over the years.

“I wrote this song when I was 14, and it had a kind of haunting sound. It’s evolved as I performed it over the years, and now it has a groove that makes it a favorite at my shows. It was so great to finally flesh it out with a full band.”

Sawyer Fredericks told the Leader-Herald he wrote all the songs on A Good Storm. The album features two versions of “4 Pockets” — the original and a special Pharrell Williams mix. Fellow Voice Season 8 and Team Pharrell contestant Mia Z also collaborated on a song, called “Stranger.”

The other song titles are, “This Fire,” “Lovers Still Alone,” “Shots Fired,” “Still Here,” “Not Coming Home,” “What I’ve Done,” and the title track, “A Good Storm.” Sawyer Fredericks said fans can expect to hear “a lot of different emotions” and “different styles” on the much-anticipated album.

Sawyer Fredericks will be heading out on a West Coast tour in support of A Good Storm. The tour kicks off May 7 in Tucson, Arizona, and wraps up in Phoenix, Arizona, on May 26. Mia Z will join him on the 14-show, 7-state tour. Fredericks told the Leader-Herald he is experiencing some slight pre-tour jitters.

“I am slightly nervous about the tour. I’m not sure if my voice will be worn out after singing so much.”

Despite the nerves, Sawyer’s mother, Kirsten Fredericks, who will be traveling with him, said they are “very excited” and “feeling positive.”

Sawyer Fredericks is a homeschooled farm boy who lives on his family’s 88-acre farm in upstate New York. Prior to being on The Voice, Fredericks only performed at local farmers markets, coffee houses, and around his beloved farm. The farm is where Sawyer learned to play guitar and gained inspiration for his music, according to his official website.

“That’s where I started playing guitar. It was so much fun growing up there. There was a lot of open space, and I was able to be around animals. Nature really inspired me. I feel like it gave me a different musical perspective.”

Sawyer’s unique and soulful style blew The Voice judges away, earning him a four-chair turn during his Blind Audition performance of “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow.” He chose Pharrell Williams as his coach and went on to become the youngest contestant to ever win The Voice at just 16-years-old. Sawyer Fredericks also set a record for having 14 songs on the iTunes Top 200 Singles Chart at one time. Over one million copies of the songs he performed on the show were sold.

Sawyer Fredericks had to overcome shyness and inexperience during his Voice journey. He said one piece of advice given to him by coach Pharrell Williams is one he will never forget — “Stay true to yourself.” Sawyer has managed to follow that advice while also learning to write and collaborate with other artists. Often described as an “old soul,” Fredericks has a simple but heartfelt wish for his music.

“I want the lyrics and music to connect to the audience. I just hope they feel when they hear me.”
