Drew Barrymore And The Unraveling Of Her Marriage

Drew Barrymore introduced a new rose wine at the Pebble Beach Food & Wine Festival on April 2 and seemed in good spirits as she posed for selfies with fans, according to a report from People. The new wine is an addition to Drew’s line of wines, by the name of Barrymore Wines. It was the same day that she confirmed her split from her husband of nearly four years, Will Kopelman. A People insider told the magazine the following.

“They wanted different things… Sometimes you want so badly to have what you didn’t have and then when you get it, it’s not exactly what you thought it would be.”

Drew, 41, has previously spoken about learning to compromise in marriage in order to grow as a couple. Us Weekly insiders tell the magazine that Barrymore feels “like a failure.”

“She’s disappointed this didn’t work. They both expected to be together forever.”

The two come from very different backgrounds, which may have contributed to the split. Barrymore had a much-publicized adolescence that included heavy use of drugs and alcohol while the straight-laced 38-year-old Kopelman comes from the family of former Chanel CEO Arie Kopelman and attended boarding school.

Us Weekly reports that things actually began to fall apart not long after Drew and Will were married, nearly four years ago. There are rumors that they have been living largely separate lives for about a year.

Barrymore tried to reform. She thought she wanted a very traditional family life and tried to transform into what she thought her role would be in that situation. She began wearing Chanel clothing and moved into a Park Avenue duplex. Last summer, Drew told Us the following.

“I’m much more conservative now… I love how traditional I have become.”

In the end, it seems the new life simply didn’t fit Drew. An insider described it in this way.

“Will is this great guy from a stable family and everything she didn’t have growing up, but it just wasn’t making her happy.”

The couple has two children: 3-year-old Frankie and 1-year-old Olive.

Barrymore is doing what she can to move on and be the mother her children need her to be, trying to keep things as normal as possible so they don’t worry about anything. Drew and Will issued this statement to People about maintaining their family through this stressful time.

“Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family… Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on… Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority.”

This will be the third divorce for Drew Barrymore. She was previously married to bartender Jeremy Thomas. They married in 1994, when Drew was 19-years-old. That marriage last less than two months. In 2001, Barrymore married Charlie’s Angels co-star Tom Green. After five months, they split.

Drew had her first acting job at the age of 11 months. She came to fame from her role as Gertie in the 1982 Steven Spielberg film E. T. the Extraterrestrial. Her adolescence was very public, and included the abuse of alcohol and drugs. Barrymore went to rehab for her substance abuse twice. In 1990, Drew wrote a book titled Little Girl Lost about her childhood (she began drinking at the age of 10) and adolescence and her emergence from the years of substance abuse. Barrymore has appeared in dozens of films. In 2009, she received a Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV for her role in Grey Gardens.
