Big Mac Buzz: Green ‘Spearmint After-Dinner Big Mac’ And Chicken McNuggets With Cognac Dipping Sauces

There’s an article causing plenty of buzz online, seemingly out of Oak Brook, Illinois, the home of McDonald’s headquarters. Showing a bold green Big Mac in the photo accompanying the article, the so-called new “Spearmint After-Dinner Big Mac” is being called one that humorously offers a refreshing after-dinner taste. It’s sort of a spin on the fact that some Americans tend to eat a lot of food — so the after-dinner green mint Big Mac is almost believable upon initially reading the description.

“OAK BROOK, IL—Calling the new menu item a cool, refreshing way for consumers to finish their meals, McDonald’s officials introduced the Spearmint After-Dinner Big Mac during a press event Tuesday at the company’s corporate headquarters. ‘Our new Spearmint Big Mac takes the classic, all-American burger customers love and gives it a minty twist that’s perfect for cleansing your palate and freshening your breath,’ said McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook, explaining that the new Big Mac’s menthol-and-sesame-seed bun, spearmint-oil-infused American cheese, and two all-beef patties provide a delicious and intense burst of mint that’s ‘perfect for capping off any Value Meal.’ ‘Plus, the cooling micro-crystals in our crisp new Special Sauce provide the Spearmint Big Mac with an icy mint rush that leaves your mouth feeling clean and frosty for the rest of the day.’ Easterbrook added that the company is also developing a six-piece Chicken McNugget Aperitif Combo with port and cognac dipping sauces to help settle patrons’ stomachs and aid digestion.”

However, it turns out the report is from the Onion. The satirical website that published the article titled “McDonald’s Announces New Spearmint After-Dinner Big Mac” on March 8 and currently reports the piece as one of the website’s most popular articles. While many people realize that the news about the green Big Mac is simply funny satire, others apparently do not.

On Facebook, the buzz about the Big Mac involves not only the funny green Big Mac but also news about a basketball player who thrilled a little boy by winning the crowd free Big Mac sandwiches by hitting a couple of free throw shots.

On social media, folks are joking that the green Big Mac could make their teeth really clean and their breath really fresh after eating the spearmint-flavored number. Others quip that the green Big Mac would be a great sandwich when paired with their limited-time-only McShamrock Shake and additional fare.

While not pictured above in the top photo, the green Big Mac is getting its fair share of photo-sharing online. Above, the “Big Big Mac” artistic creation by Tom Friedman can be seen. That “Big Big Mac,” while not green but huge all the same, was revealed at the Arts & Food exhibition in Milan, Italy. It was artwork that turned an everyday item like a Big Mac into art in the same way that Andy Warhol made art out of a Campbell’s Soup can.

On Twitter, the buzz about Big Macs includes not only McDonald’s fake green Big Mac but video of a young fan of the Chicago Bulls who was truly excited to win a free Big Mac. As seen in the below video, the little boy continually gives the man next to him high-fives because he is overjoyed at the prospect of winning a free Big Mac to eat.

According to SB Nation, E’Twaun Moore needed to sink two free throws to win free Big Macs for the fans, and Moore didn’t disappoint. After making both shots, Moore gained a fan for life.
