‘Suicide Squad’ Sequel Already Being Planned By Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has a robust lineup of superhero films aiming to expand on the DC Cinematic Universe, but they know that they have a lot to catch up on, especially on account of the many top-grossing movies already released by Marvel Studios. With the cinematic release of Batman v Superman scheduled for next month and Suicide Squad already set for August, Warner Bros. are armed to the teeth and ready to compete with Marvel Studios’s Captain America: Civil War in 2016.

The studio, however, is just getting started, as it’s already laid out plans for the upcoming cinematic release of Wonder Woman and Justice League: Part One. According to Den of Geek, they are reportedly making plans for a sequel to Suicide Squad, just months before the first Suicide Squad film’s cinematic release. Warner Bros. want director David Ayer to return for another Suicide Squad shoot in 2017 as well.

This is a good sign for DC fans. For one, this can mean that the movie studio is confident that the first Suicide Squad movie will be a success. The first official Suicide Squad trailer, released during the CW special feature DC Films Present The Dawn of the Justice League in January, generated a lot of excitement from fans.

David Ayer directed the first Suicide Squad film, with actors Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnnaman, Cara Delevingne, and Jared Leto taking up the roles of the titular group’s members, whom the official trailer aptly branded as the “Worst Heroes Ever.”

The Suicide Squad concept in itself is interesting and fresh, especially when compared to other superhero properties. For one, the titular team is composed of villains who were forced to work on the side of angels thanks to the machinations of Amanda Waller, a high-ranking government official whose main interest is to uphold national security by whatever means necessary.

Here’s the official synopsis for Suicide Squad:

“It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?”

It makes sense for Warner Bros. to follow up on the first Suicide Squad film on account of the characters’ popularity alone. The Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) are two of the DC Universe’s most beloved characters. Add the combined star power and talent of Jared Leto and Margot Robbie to bank on, the success of the film financial-wise is already a certainty.

Jared Leto, for one, has fully committed himself to the Joker role. And rightfully so, since he’s got some big shoes to fill after’s the late Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the diabolical Batman villain in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Even with only the trailers to show for it, Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie is already getting a ton of praise for her excellent portrayal of Harley Quinn.

“Harley is creepy, violent, crazy – all of the things that I aspire to be!” Margot said during an interview with Cineplex.

Warner Bros. has not released an official announcement, but the sequel happening in the near future is almost a certainty, given how most superhero titles that debuted in the last several years have had at least one sequel. Sure, Fantastic Four is one big exception, but Suicide Squad can’t be that bad, would it?
